Why nobody can guarantee a number one ranking

Any vendor guaranteeing you a number one ranking is describing something they do not control. This is worth understanding in detail, because the guarantee is the single most reliable signal of a bad supplier.

Why the guarantee is impossible

Nobody outside Google sets the ranking. The ranking systems are Google's, they change continuously, and they are not disclosed. A vendor can influence inputs. They cannot set outputs.

There is no single ranking to guarantee. Results vary by the searcher's exact location, their history, their device, and the moment. "Number one" is not one fact — it is thousands of different facts, most of which disagree.

Competitors are also working. Ranking is relative. A competitor who opens, invests or acquires reviews changes your position without you doing anything wrong.

Proximity cannot be bought. For many local queries the searcher's distance from you is decisive. No amount of optimisation moves your building.

How the guarantee is usually constructed

When one is offered, the fine print almost always contains one of these.

A keyword nobody searches. Guaranteed first place for "artisanal cold brew coffee Surry Hills weekday" — a term with effectively no volume.

An unstated measurement location. Rank measured from a point of the vendor's choosing, which will be near your premises where proximity does the work.

A time window with no remedy. "Results within six months" where the consequence of failure is that you have already paid for six months.

Rank in a tool, not in the world. Reported from a rank-tracker configuration rather than what customers see.

What an honest supplier offers instead

Leading indicators. Profile completeness, review response rate, posting cadence, listing consistency — real, controllable, and correlated with outcomes.

Measurement with its method stated. Where rank was measured, when, and by what. Grid points, not a number without provenance.

Evidence for recommendations. Whether advice rests on documented platform guidance, observed correlation, or industry convention — and saying which.

Outcome metrics. Calls, direction requests, clicks. Imperfectly attributable, but closer to money than position.

The questions to ask

Ask where a claimed rank was measured from, and what happens if it is not achieved. Ask which recommendations are documented by the platform and which are inference. Ask what they will not do.

A supplier who cannot answer the last one has not thought about it — or does not want to.
